Description
Applying to an REU, SROP, MSRP-style program, or another summer research opportunity? Before you submit, would a knowledgeable second perspective help you see what your application communicates? Drawing on more than 20 years in graduate education, including directing MIT's Summer Research Program (MSRP), I offer a focused final review of your summer research application materials. My experience includes research recruitment, application review, faculty placements, and student development. You don't need extensive research experience to have something meaningful to contribute. Research programs can value curiosity, preparation, initiative, and a genuine interest in learning. My approach looks beyond grammar and surface polish to consider four questions: Preparation: Does your application communicate the knowledge, experiences, interests, and strengths you bring—even if this would be your first formal research experience? Purpose: Is it clear what sparks your curiosity, what you hope to explore, and what you want to learn through research? Fit: Do your materials explain why this particular research opportunity, program, or research environment interests you? Readiness: What is already working, and what deserves attention before submission? I'll review your near-final application statement or short-answer responses and CV or résumé for one research opportunity, provide written feedback and a personalized Submission Readiness & Fit Snapshot, and meet with you to discuss your most important next steps. The goal is not a perfect application or a guarantee of selection. It's to help you communicate your curiosity, preparation, research interests, and potential clearly, credibly, and in your own voice.
What you'll get from this package
Annotated feedback on one applicant-authored research statement or set of short-answer responses (up to 800 words total) and one CV or résumé (up to two pages).
Personalized Submission Readiness & Fit Snapshot identifying strengths to preserve, priority revisions, and important research-program details or requirements to verify.
One 30-minute individual debrief to discuss your feedback, answer questions about the review, and clarify your final revision priorities.

I begin by reviewing your near-final application responses, CV or résumé, the program's actual prompts, and information about the research opportunity you're applying to. My review considers Preparation, Purpose, Fit, and Readiness. I'll look at how your experiences, research interests, and learning goals come together—and whether a reader can understand why this particular opportunity is meaningful to you. Drawing on my experience directing MIT's Summer Research Program, I consider how applicants communicate research curiosity and potential, including when they are new to research. You'll receive annotated feedback and a concise Submission Readiness & Fit Snapshot highlighting what is working, what could be strengthened, and what still needs verification. We'll then meet for a 30-minute conversation to discuss my observations and prioritize your next steps. My approach is collaborative, candid, and developmental. I provide substantive guidance while respecting your voice, your experiences, and your ownership of the application.
Package scope: Includes up to 90 minutes of professional service: approximately 60 minutes of asynchronous document review and written feedback, followed by one 30-minute live debrief. Materials: Please provide one near-final, applicant-authored research statement or set of short-answer responses totaling up to 800 words, one CV or résumé (up to two pages), the actual application prompts, and the official link to your chosen REU or summer research program. Timing: I recommend booking at least five business days before your application deadline. Written feedback is generally provided within two to three business days after complete materials are received, subject to confirmed availability. Please contact me before purchasing if your deadline is sooner. Limits: This package covers one research opportunity and one review cycle. It does not include drafting or rewriting application materials, reviewing revised drafts, extensive program or faculty research, unlimited correspondence, application submission, or guaranteed proofreading. Additional essays, prompts, or documents beyond the stated limits are not included. Client responsibilities: You remain the author of your application and are responsible for verifying current deadlines, eligibility requirements, program expectations, funding or stipend information, housing arrangements, and submission instructions directly with the research program. Selection, research placement, stipends, or other outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Additional substantive advising can be arranged separately through Leland.

Looking for a first or next research experience—and unsure which opportunities deserve your time? We’ll consider what you hope to learn, the mentoring and practical support you need, and how to communicate the experience you already bring. I bring more than 20 years of experience in graduate education, including leadership at MIT and experience at Harvard and the University of Maryland. My work has included research pathways, admissions, fellowships, mentoring, and student support. At MIT, I directed the Summer Research Program (MSRP), overseeing recruitment, application review, faculty and research placements, participant support, assessment, and alumni engagement. We can explore REUs, summer research programs, and other opportunities, develop your application strategy, and consider how to communicate your interests and experience. Along the way, we'll consider where you can learn, contribute, build meaningful relationships, and become part of a research community that supports your continued growth.
